The Society for Polymer Science (SPSI) India
The Society for Polymer Science, India has had a checkered history of more than three decades. The Society was established as Professional Society in March 1979 under the guidance and leadership of Prof. H. Kothandaraman and had its office at Madras in Department of Polymer Science, Anna University, Madras. Dr. R. A. Mashelkar, Ex-Director General, CSIR was elected as the President of this society in 1991 during the Symposium Polymers '91. In order to establish a vibrant national-level professional society to help to shape national policies in the area of polymeric materials, a decision was taken in February 1995 to unite all existing polymer-related societies in India under one banner e.g. The Society for Polymer Science, India. Prof. I. K. Varma was elected as the president of the society in 1995. A sub-committee under the chair-personship of Prof. I. K. Varma was constituted to look into the rules, regulations and bye laws of the society. The revised Memorandum of Association and Rules were approved in the general body meeting held at MACRO ‘95 and it was decided to move the headquarter from Madras to Pune under the leadership of Dr. S. Sivaram for administrative convenience. The Society for Polymer Science, India was duly registered under “The Societies Registration Act, Govt. of Maharashtra”, at Pune and its Registration No is : MAH/929/2001/Pune dated August 16, 2001.
The Society functions through ten regional Chapters, namely at Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Delhi,, Kharagpur, Kolkatta, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram. Each chapter functions independently in terms of collection of mesmbership fees, accounting and auditing as well as organizing professional activities for the benefit of chapter members. Pune is the Headquarter of the Society.
